DRUM BRAKES: On the drum brake system located at the rear wheels on most cars hydraulic fluid enters the wheel cylinder under pressure and forces outward against the retracting springs to push the brake shoes, on which the brake linings are attached up against the spinning drum to stop the car. Periodically, rear drum brakes shoes need to be adjusted. This is accomplished at the brake adjuster usually located at the lower portion of the vacuum plate. The rear wheel brake system on most foreign and domestic cars employs a drum brake setup, so called because the hydraulic system pushes out on brake shoes that slow and stop the spinning brake drum.
